Diver Mis-Fuelling Can Cost Upto £3000 To Repair
More and more people in the UK are accidentally filling their car with the wrong fuel, and drivers who mis-fuel their diesel cars with petrol can expect a costly bill to repair the damage.
Repair costs, due to damaged engines costs from £300-£3,000 depending on the type of diesel engine fitted to the car.
Mis-fueling can be even more of a problem for hire-car companies that have fleets of hundreds of thousands of vehicles to maintain. The cost of upkeep on these vehicles alone can be £50m so any preventative actions that the hire companies can take to stop people putting the wrong fuel in their vehicles would be an added bonus.
The highest risk vehicles are those fitted with the modern common rail diesel engines. These are less tolerant to the wrong type of fuel and once petrol gets in it can mean replacing the pressure fuel pumps, line filters, tank, and injectors. You can see why it would cost a few thousand to fix this!
The most important thing to consider, if you are aware that you have put the wrong fuel in your vehicle is not to start the engine. Once the engine has started and the fuel starts to enter the engines system the cost of the repair will increase massively. If it's just in the tank then you can get away with a simple drain.
Breakdown Cover does not cover accidental mis-fueling so the costs have to be covered by the consumer themselves. Sometimes insurance companies will help to pay for the repairs but in some cases claims have been turned down. Usually, the more expensive the car the greater the repair cost. Even if your car is on hire, the hire company will expect you to cover the cost of the repair as it is not usual for it to be covered by the hire agreement.
For those drivers out there that want to be pro-active, there are devices on the market that can help you prevent such unnecessary repair costs. These devices can be simple as an audible alert when you open you petrol cap that act as a reminder when you got to fill up.
