BCDs
Since the BCD is a very important piece of Scuba Diving equipment it is important that you have the right fit as well as one which is of the highest quality. The BCD is what you use to control your buoyancy and therefore any malfunction could be extremely risky. If you own a BCD then you are not only guaranteed that it will fit you well but you will also be able to make sure that it is in working order.
Regulators and Alternate Air Supplies
Having your own regulator and alternate is quite beneficial since this is what you will be using to get your air supply. Having your own instead of one that you have rented means that only you will have used it and you do not have to worry about the countless others who might have used the same regulator.
Fins and a Dive Mask
These two are probably the least expensive of the equipment that you will need to take up Scuba Diving. Having your own fins and mask means that you are ensured that they fit you correctly as well as that they are in good condition. The first group is what is usually needed when taking a class:

This group is what you'll need to scuba dive in addition to the first group:

Other accessories which are not really needed to dive, but start handling some "what if" situations:
